Ludhiana’s Bicycle Industry: What the Manufacturing Hub Means for Buyers

By March 23, 2024No Comments

Ludhiana is where Indian bicycles are made. The city and its surrounding industrial areas host much of the country’s bicycle and component production, and that concentration matters to a buyer: more suppliers to compare, a deep parts ecosystem, and freight links built for shipping bicycles. Here is how to use the hub well.

Why the hub exists

Bicycle manufacturing clusters where its inputs are. Ludhiana grew around engineering and metal-working businesses, and over decades the city became the base for many of India’s largest bicycle producers and hundreds of component makers. For a buyer, the practical effect is simple: frames, parts, finishing and packing are all available locally, so production moves quickly and problems get fixed locally too.

Manufacturer, component supplier or trader?

Not every Ludhiana business with a catalogue makes bicycles. Some manufacture complete bicycles, some make components, and some trade. Ask directly: where is the bicycle assembled, who paints and finishes it, and whose name is on the frame. A genuine manufacturer answers with a factory address and invites a visit.

Make one trip do the work

  • Shortlist two or three suppliers and visit them on the same trip
  • Give each the same written requirement so quotations compare cleanly
  • Check the product you will receive, not a display sample
  • Confirm dispatch, warranty and spares support in writing
