International Cycle Brands in India: A Retailer’s Guide

By April 13, 2024No Comments

International cycle brands do reach Indian customers, but through structured channels: official distributors, brand websites and exclusive brand stores. If you run a shop and want a global name on your floor, the route is an authorised stockist discussion, not a grey-market purchase. Here is how the market works – and the alternative many retailers prefer.

How international brands sell in India

Global bicycle brands typically appoint an Indian distributor or open exclusive stores in major cities, and they control who stocks their bicycles. For a retailer, that means minimum orders, display expectations and pricing rules set by the brand. The brand’s name brings customers in; the terms decide whether the arrangement earns you money.

What to verify before becoming a stockist

  • Is the distributor authorised by the brand for India?
  • Who honours the warranty, and where are spares stocked?
  • What are the minimum order, payment and display expectations?
  • Are prices and supply protected in your area?

The alternative: your own brand

If international-brand terms do not fit your business, there is a second route used by many successful Indian retailers: stock Indian-made bicycles under an established national brand, or build your own label through an OEM/private-label manufacturer. Hi-Bird, based in Ludhiana, supplies branded bicycles for dealers and accepts OEM/private-label briefs – so the bicycles on your floor can carry your name, with Indian manufacturing economics behind them.

Make the decision on numbers

Whichever route you choose, compare landed cost, warranty support and repeat availability in writing. A famous logo is not a business case by itself – and the same is true of a cheaper unknown one.

Discuss a Hi-Bird dealership or your own private label.
